‘Mr. ATS’ on the future of the applicant tracking systems: “Start over with nothing but the candidate at the center”

Recruitment veteran Peter Gold, also known as Mr. ATS, is outspoken about the future of recruitment systems. The Englishman has been around for years in the world of recruitment systems and calls himself Mr. ATS. American podcasters Chad & Cheese interviewed Peter Gold and Recruitmenttech.com has included the highlights in this article.

Configuration is the problem, not the recruitment system

The average experience with ATSs is not necessarily positive, the gentlemen in the podcast claim. According to Gold, it’s not the recruitment system, but its configuration that’s causing the average recruiter to be unhappy with the recruitment system. “If the configuration is not good, or no longer fits with how people recruit now, the recruitment system has to be configured differently. And you have to pay for that, which worsens the relationship between the recruiter and the system,” he explains in the podcast below.

Recruiting system becomes a kind of iPhone

The recruitment system is increasingly becoming the central system that you can plug other technology into, much like an iPhone, which has long since ceased to be the only thing you can make calls with. “More and more recruitment systems are becoming part of broad hr and recruitment platforms, so they don’t have to develop in breadth.” Gold is not a fan of this. “Niche recruitment systems that don’t work from a platform mindset will be left behind,” Gold argues.

Align with the recruitment process

It’s important to have your recruitment system and your plans and goals with it clearly in place before you start working with other tools and fancy functionalities. “Before you start working with fancy artificial intelligence, you should first look at the basis of the recruitment system and how you can use it optimally for your target group. After all, it is primarily a candidate tracking system. And instead of building on what you’ve been doing for the past twenty years, start over with nothing but the candidate at the center.”

The dark side of APIs

Recruitment systems tend to pride themselves on all the integration they have, but you have to be careful about how deep the integration is, or you’ll be in for a rude awakening.

Previously on the ATS Show, we spoke with Peter Gold, then Manager of Recruiting Solutions EMEA at Cornerstone, about Recruitment Automation and much more. You can watch and listen to this episode here.
