The OpenAI drama unveiled
The podcast hosts provided a detailed timeline of the tumultuous events at OpenAI, including Altman’s alleged firing, the subsequent resignations of key figures, and the potential financial ramifications for the company. The rollercoaster saga ended with Altman’s surprising return, marking a significant upheaval within the organisation. “It has every sign of a start-up that just grew far too quickly”, Spanjaart said on the episode.
ChatGPT’s 2023 journey
The hosts then provided a comprehensive overview of ChatGPT’s evolution throughout the year. From incremental improvements in factuality and mathematical capabilities to the launch of the paid version, GPT Plus, and the introduction of GPT-4 with enhanced reasoning and creativity, ChatGPT matured into a versatile tool.
Noteworthy features included the introduction of AI plugins, voice capabilities, and the integration of DALL·E 3, allowing ChatGPT to respond with images. The hosts highlighted the game-changing impact of web browsing for Plus users, enabling real-time access to information beyond the previous September 2021 data cut-off. “They’re now rolling out custom versions of ChatGPT that you can create for a specific purpose—called GPTs”, said Hemminga on the podcast.
“GPTs can help you learn the rules to any board game, help teach your kids math, or design stickers.”
“GPTs are a new way for anyone to create a tailored version of ChatGPT to be more helpful in their daily life, at specific tasks, at work, or at home—and then share that creation with others. For example, GPTs can help you learn the rules to any board game, help teach your kids math, or design stickers.”
A blessing or a curse?
However, the hosts acknowledged concerns raised by a study conducted at the University of Ghent, revealing potential discriminatory behaviour in CV screening by ChatGPT based on ethnic identities. The study emphasised the need for a cautious approach to AI in personnel selection processes, considering the potential reinforcement of biases present in training data.
