On the 7th episode of AI in Recruitment, we are joined by Martyn Redstone, a leading expert on all things conversational AI and recruitment. Topics of conversation: candidates using AI for their resumes and cover letters — is it fair game? Or does it mark the end of the CV? Listen to the full episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or via the link in the article.

AI has ‘been around’

Redstone’s extensive experience and expertise have allowed him to witness and contribute to the transformation of the recruitment industry using technology. From a background in engineering and computer science, he transitioned into the world of recruitment technology and, later, conversational AI. Today, he is the founder of pplbots, a consultancy specialising in implementing conversational AI solutions for recruitment businesses. “We work with recruitment businesses and in-house teams to implement conversational AI solutions for them and we also do training in generative AI.”

But Redstone makes a point of noting: AI has been around. “Large language models, the technology that is powering in the background of ChatGPT: I’ve been working with those in a conversational AI sense since 2018, 2019. So, for me, I kind of understood the whole concept of what everyone was getting excited about.”

‘Conversations are the skill of the future’

Redstone was a keynote speaker at the sold-out Recruitment Tech Event, where he shared his expertise on AI and its applications in recruitment. “My keynote was all about how the way that we interact with technology has changed. How conversations and conversations with technology are going to be the future skill that recruiters need.”

Why shouldn’t candidates embrace AI?

“In the discussion about candidates using AI, we find it truly intriguing how candidates are leveraging it for various aspects of their job search”, he said. “They are using AI to craft cover letters, curate CVs and resumes, and even employ it as an interview assistant. Moreover, they have the ability to apply to multiple job openings simultaneously through AI assistance.”

“The question arises: Is it cheating, or is it merely a wake-up call to reevaluate the traditional recruitment practices that may be becoming obsolete?”

“Recruiters often perceive this trend as a threat, raising concerns about the use of AI by candidates. However, a different perspective emerges, suggesting that if recruiters are embracing it, why shouldn’t candidates? The question arises: Is it cheating, or is it merely a wake-up call to reevaluate the traditional recruitment practices that may be becoming obsolete?”

End of the CV?

“Cover letters, for instance, have seemingly lost their significance over time”, said Redstone. “Yet, with the power of AI, candidates can now dynamically tailor their applications. They can easily adapt their job descriptions, integrate their CVs, and generate custom cover letters to suit each specific job opportunity.”

“It opens the door to innovative possibilities within the recruitment process.”

“In light of this evolving landscape, one can envision a future where bot-to-bot communication becomes increasingly prevalent. In such a scenario, candidates may efficiently apply to a multitude of jobs simultaneously, and a well-structured system could facilitate this seamless interaction. It opens the door to innovative possibilities within the recruitment process.”
