In the ninth episode of AI in Recruitment, hosts Martijn Hemminga and Jasper Spanjaart look back at the way Artificial Intelligence (AI) has developed in recruitment in 2023. They also look forward to 2024, with plenty of predictions on the menu. Listen to the full episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or via the link in the article.

EU AI Act unveiled

The hosts dive into the first major AI news of 2024, heralding the European Union’s groundbreaking move with the EU AI Act – the world’s first AI law. “It’s the Avengers of legislation for artificial intelligence”, Spanjaart says. “It emphasises the focus on safety, transparency, traceability, non-discrimination, and eco-friendliness. The legislation introduces different risk levels for AI applications, including a stern look at AI in recruitment systems.”

Europe’s quest for an OpenAI competitor

Hemminga shares the news of Mistral AI, a French startup, raising a staggering €385 million in investments, positioning itself as one of the leading AI companies in Europe. The founders, with experience at major US tech companies, have attracted investments from notable players like Salesforce and Nvidia.

“Only German AI company Aleph Alpha raised more money within Europe. In late November, that start-up raised half a billion dollars in investment”, Hemminga said. “Which the company said would allow it to compete with ChatGPT parent OpenAI and big companies like Microsoft and Google in the field of artificial intelligence.”

Trends and optimism for 2024

The hosts share an optimistic outlook for 2024, citing global hiring positivity despite recent challenges. Google research indicates that 39% of hiring leaders are ready to invest in hiring this year, with 70% of US job seekers feeling confident about securing new opportunities. Online recruiting takes center stage, with 58% of decision-makers turning to big recruitment sites. Moreover, they foresee an emphasis on productivity as the main KPI for AI, the rise of fake news generated by AI, and the dominance of Nvidia in the AI landscape.
